Definition

Body Integrity Disorder (BID), also known as Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), is a psychological condition where an individual experiences a strong desire to amputate or alter one or more healthy limbs or body parts. This desire often stems from a mismatch between the individual's perceived body image and their actual physical body.

History

BID has been documented in psychological literature, with increasing recognition in recent decades. It is not yet classified in the DSM-5 but is a subject of ongoing research.
