Paraphilia

Definition

A paraphilia is a type of sexual interest or arousal pattern that deviates from what society considers typical or socially acceptable. It involves intense and persistent sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors that focus on specific objects, activities, or individuals.

Disordered paraphilias

Paraphilias may cause distress or impairment in functioning and can involve non-consenting individuals or behaviors that are harmful to oneself or others. Sources: Mayo Clinic: The Mayo Clinic defines paraphilia as "a condition characterized by abnormal sexual desires, typically involving extreme or dangerous activities" (Mayo Clinic, 2022). American Psychiatric Association (APA): According to the APA's "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5)," paraphilic disorders are characterized by "recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving non-human objects, the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one's partner, or children or other non-consenting persons" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Verywell Mind: Verywell Mind describes paraphilias as "unusual sexual interests or behaviors that involve non-consenting individuals, suffering or humiliation, or objects not typically associated with sexual arousal" (Cherry, 2022).

Paraphiles may or may not consider their paraphilias "disordered", usually based on their own judgement (word chocie???) of whether or not it involves behaviors that are harmful to themself or others.

"Pro-para"

The term "pro-para" is often used in the radqueer community as a dogwhistle to indicate that they believe all paraphilias can be acted on in some way. Radqueers may argue that paraphilias like pedophilia and zoophilia can have consensual interactions, and label themselves as "anti abuse" and/or "pro consent." Because of this, the online opinion of paraphilias in general is very negative, and Tumblr users especially may assume that anyone with a paraphilia is a dangerous predator. However, not all paraphilias would cause harm to the object of attraction - such as -whatever its called-, the paraphilic attraction to feet.

Some Tumblr users have switched to using the phrase "harmful para" when they're referring to paraphilias like the big three, but this has been critiqued by many paraphiles^{[citation needed]} because the phrase is vague, and because it implies that the paraphilia itself is a harmful thing. This can make paraphiles feel as if they are bad for existing, even if their individual paraphilas would not harm the object of attraction.

"The big three"

A common slang seen in radqueer/anti radqueer discourse is "the big three," which refers to pedophilia, zoophilia, and wait I forgot the other one.

Someone can technically be a pedophile in the paraphilia sense, not in the sense of wanting to perform the act, and be 100% against child sexual abuse and not support radqueer idealogy. However, the radqueer community isn't a good example of what actual reasonable paraphiles are like since it's a mix of anti-contact never wants to act on it paraphiles and pro-contact you're ableist if you don't let me have sex with kids losers.

List of Paraphilias with Emoji Codes

The radqueer community has coined emoji codes to stand in place of most paraphilias, including ones which are fairly harmless like feet. This is usually used as a method for them to hide the true nature of their intent and avoid their accounts being banned; for example a radqueer may describe themself as a "pro-contact anti-abuse -emoji for being a ped0 freak-", which would just appear as emojis to someone unaware, but is code to mean that they have a paraphilia for children, want to have contact with children and/or think that all people with the same paraphilia also should, and believe that there can be consensual/non-abusive relationships between ped0philes and children.

Causes and correlations

Some people (who?) theorize that paraphilas develop as a result of experiences in childhood.
